Deadwood, South Dakota

On our journey from South Dakota to Wyoming, we deliberately took the scenic route—through the breathtaking Spearfish Canyon instead of the faster highway. Before entering this stunning canyon, we made a relaxing stop in historic Deadwood, sipping Starbucks coffee and catching the first set of the thrilling Wimbledon final between Alcaraz and Sinner. But the open road was calling, and we soon continued our exploration.

The bench we found was actually a long stone wall outside the visitor center where we’d parked. It offered the perfect spot to pause, stretch our legs, and take in the peaceful surroundings before diving deeper into the canyon’s majestic beauty.

About Spearfish Canyon:
Spearfish Canyon is one of South Dakota’s most picturesque natural treasures, famous for its steep limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and winding scenic roads. Carved over millennia by Spearfish Creek, the canyon offers incredible hiking trails and viewpoints, attracting nature lovers and photographers year-round.

The nearby town of Deadwood, steeped in Wild West history, adds a charming historical context. Once a lawless gold rush town in the 1870s, Deadwood today preserves its vibrant past while providing cozy cafes and shops—a perfect spot for a road trip pitstop.

Taking this beautiful detour through Spearfish Canyon enriched our family’s Rockies road trip, combining spectacular scenery with a touch of tennis excitement—an unexpectedly memorable combination!
