Devils Tower Monument, Wyoming

One of our favorite spots during our family road trip around the Rockies was another bench at Devils Tower National Monument—this one offering a breathtaking panoramic view across Wyoming’s wide-open plains. Sitting here, we marveled at how incredibly far one can see, with the endless horizon stretching beneath a clear summer sky.

As we admired the expansive view, our imagination drifted to the past, picturing what it must have been like centuries ago. How far could people then see, scanning the vast plains to spot approaching riders or wildlife from miles away? It was easy for the kids—and us—to imagine life in those earlier times, adding a special historical flavor to our visit.

About the Viewpoint at Devils Tower:
Wyoming’s landscape around Devils Tower is famous for its broad vistas and wide-open spaces. From benches and trails near the tower, visitors can see sweeping grasslands dotted with distant hills, reminding us how important vision and vigilance must have been for early inhabitants.

Historically, these vast prairies were crucial hunting grounds and territories for Native American tribes, who relied on their sharp eyesight to watch for wildlife and approaching visitors or threats. This natural vantage point thus became an ideal spot for reflection on history, distance, and human ingenuity.

Our time spent at this scenic bench provided not only a moment of rest but also a fascinating window into Wyoming’s rich cultural past, adding yet another memorable chapter to our summer adventures.
